Blog Entry #1- Picking A Topic

1. What three lessons were most helpful for you to see, and why?
  • One lesson by Patricia Arellano was very helpful primarily because she was very organized and professional when speaking of her project. Her style of presenting was very deconstructive in a way where I was able to understand her topic throughly. A lesson by Daisy Torres was very helpful with the concept of engaging your audience when presenting. She decorated the class room in correlation with her topic which allowed the audience to feel a part of her topic. Hannah Tran's lesson was also very helpful, for it showed me how to entertain the audience with an engaging activity and an engaging introduction.
2. List one thing that you learned about the senior project in interviews that will help you get off to a good start?
  • One of the most essential pieces of information given to me during my senior project interviews were to take advantage of my mentorship, keep tract of my articles, and most importantly do not procrastinate. These vital pieces of information have relived my anxiety levels. Knowing what to keep tract of with this project has opened my eyes on how easy this project can be if I am dedicated.
3. What topic(s) are you considering, and why?
  • I have considered optometry as a major topic choice for my senior project, but I am also interested in nursing as "plan B". Growing up, I have always been skilled and fascinated with most subjects that involve science, but more so that of the human body. The human body is made up of many complexities that has constantly poked at my curiosity. I am anxious and ready to learn more about optometry because of how much we depend on our eyes. I want to be educated on how the human eye works. Our eyes behavior is quite fascinating because of the fact that they are deceived by the information the interpret. Having a mentorship opportunity at an optometry can help me narrow down possible career options thus leading me towards becoming an optometrist. I intend to discover the true meaning of becoming an optometrist and learn the medical aspects of this profession. My main goal is to enjoy and gain understanding of optometry as I am considering optometry as a possible career path.
4. What EQ do you think might be interesting to consider in guiding a project like this? (Please don't worry about any sort of formula...we want this question to come from your genuine interest).
  • What responsibilities does one have to obtain in order to educate and comfort their patient when faced with a serious medical condition?
5. What are some ideas you have about finding summer mentorship?
  • I intend to find a summer mentorship at Chino Optometry Center where I am familiar with the employees and doctors. Since I have family working there I am guaranteed to have a mentor for my senior project. I have the opportunity to interact directly with the doctors which is extremely difficult to find. This optometry is able to work around my schedule which is a major benefit because it always me to have a job and take college classes. I am not restricted what so ever with this mentorship opportunity.

  1. Hi Trino- I hope that you've looked at the hospital volunteer programs already. You won't find much if you just call about internships as they already have volunteer programs in place. Pomona Valley already accepted their volunteers through Jan 2016 or so (they only accept applications twice a year). I put the links for area hospitals on the blog, but it is important you follow up ASAP.
