Blog Entry #17- Interview Reflection 3

1. What is the most important thing I learned from the interview?

•  The most interesting and important thing I learned from my interview was Dr.Morris's experience with visual impairment and poverty. He has traveled to Mexico many many times with his church to help those in need. Many of the people he helped were extremely poor that didn't have optometrist or glasses to fix their visual impairment. I found it very interesting that Dr.Morris chose to volunteer just to help people out and not because he was forced to.

2. How has your approach to interviewing changed over the course of your senior project?

• Yes, at first I would just ask questions about the career of optometry and what it takes to become one. My interest was focused on the day to day life of an optometrist until I discovered that there is much more about optometry then just eye exams. After I read the book "Infinite vision" I had an epiphany, which lead me to research how poor health and poverty affects an individuals eyes. This subject made me extremely curious. Luckily one of my mentors, Dr.Morris, has experience with people who are visually impaired in low income settings. My questions have started to evolve into the reasons why poverty affects vision and how that can be reduced. 

Blog Entry- Independent Component 2

 1. Describe in detail what you plan to do for your 30 hours.

• For my first independent component I studied the fundamentals of contacts lenses, which varied from teaching patients to learning technical information of the different products. For my second independent component I want to head in a similar direction, but this time with glasses. I want to learn and understand the fundamentals of glasses. There are so many complexities that go into making a pair or even fixing a pair. Because there are so many complexities with glasses I am able to reach and surpass the 30 hours needed to pass.  

2. Discuss how or what you will do to meet the expectation of showing 30 hours of evidence.

• I will divide my second independent component into 3 sections that will take up roughly 10 hours for each section. The first ten hours will be "Equipment & Tools", in which I will break down and understand the functions of all the items needed to repair and make glasses. I will also repair and make glasses myself to further understand the process. The second ten hours will be "Fighting patients", which consists of various things that have to deal with the different features glasses have. This can range from the type of material the lens is to the style or brand of the frame. I will also interact with patients to understand their needs for their glasses. The final ten hours will be "Trouble shooting", which is essentially customer service revolving around glasses. This is when patients have complaints and other things that need fixing that could range from a wrong prescription to lab errors. 

3. Explain how this component will help you explore your topic in more depth.

• So far I have been focusing on how poverty correlates with poor vision. This topic goes in depth over different causes that create poor vision. One of those causes is lack of inventory, which includes glasses. Glasses aren't cheap so people in low-income settings cannot afford glasses. My independent component will help me understand just how expensive they are and how to make them more affordable for everyone.

•  The manager at chino optometry allowed me to work with some patients to help me teach them and learn myself how to put on contacts, as well as other components of my independent component like hygiene and safe handling regulations.

This is the back of the office of Chino Optometry Center where the patients would sit down with an employee and practice putting on and off their contacts all within 1 hour.

How did the component help you understand the foundation of your topic better? Please include specific examples to illustrate this.

• Hygiene and safe handling procedures are extremely important when it comes to the practice of optometry, which is part of something that I learned for my independent component in order to teach patients how to put on contacts. Having cleanliness within the work force will prevent eye infections and diseases for the patients, as well as teaching them the safest and cleanest way to put on contacts. Most eye infectious come from improper use of contacts, which is completely avoidable with proper instructions and usage for contacts. 

Blog Entry #15- Lesson 2 Reflection

1. What are you most proud of in your Lesson 2 Presentation and why?

• I was most proud of my activity because of how creative it was. Everyone was very intuitive and interested in my activity. There was a lot of laughter and discussion of the activity which made me feel that I did a pretty good job.

2. a. What assessment would you give yourself on your Lesson 2 Presentation (self-assessment)

• I would give myself an AE because of the fact that I was very professional, well rehearsed, and my audience was very interested in what I had to say next. 

b. Explain why you deserve that grade using evidence from the Lesson 2 component contract.

• I felt that I checked off all of the components needed to receive a P and I did more then expected to receive an AE.  Especially with my hook activity because of how "out of the box" it was.

3. What worked for you in your Lesson 2?

• My hook activity flowed very well into my general discussion and into my activity. Without this flow then I feel that my presentation would be all over the place without structure.  

4. What didn't work? If you had a time machine, what would you have done differently to improve your Lesson 2?

• I felt that I did very very well, but if I had to change something then I would probably site my source more and state more facts of poverty and how it affects vision.  

5. What do you think your answer #2 is going to be?

• My answer #2 will most likely be "doctors/facilities" meaning that countries or certain areas that are in poverty need more doctors and facilities to help those in need. With out doctors then visual impairment will never be fixed or addressed. 

Blog Entry #14- Interview 3 preperation

Interview #3

• I plan on interviewing Dr.Morris who is an optometrist at Chino Optometry Center. His level of expertise is varies from different ocular diseases, anatomy, and basic ocular hygiene. Dr.Morris has been a licensed doctor for over 15 years, I am confident that he is quite familiar with optometry. I have already scheduled a day and time with Dr.Morris, which will be on Monday, January 18 at 2:00 pm. Depending on his schedule my date and time may change, but for now the day is set.

Blog Entry #13- 10 hour mentorship check in

1. Where are you doing your mentorship?

• I am doing my mentorship at Chino Optometry Center. 

2. Who is your contact? What makes this person an expert?

• My main contact is optometrist Dr.Hinh,  but I will also work with Dr.Morris and possibly Dr.Chong. Each and every doctor is a licensed optometrist that have been in the practice for well over 10 years.  

3. How many hours have you done during the school year? (Summer Mentorship Hours and Mentorship Hours should be reflected separately in your Senior Project Hours log located on the right hand side of your blog).

• I have completed 19 hours of the total 50 hours needed for my senior project. I plan on finishing my hours by April, but I will try to finish sooner if possible. Doing that would relieve lot of stress from the project that i have already. 

4. Succinctly summarize what you did, how well you and your mentor worked together, and how you plan to complete the remaining hours.

• Due to privacy issues with patients I usually stay in the back room where I price frames, organize inventory, and help clean office spaces. When I am allowed to be with patience I usually stay in the shadows of my mentor as I anylize her work and write down notes on things that are interesting or anything my mentor may tell me to write down. My mentor also lets me see interesting cases where patients have serious eye conditions. Although I haven't received as much time with patients I do have time to talk to my mentor about any questions I may have. 

Blog Entry #12- Holiday project update

1. It is important to consistently work on your senior project, whether it is break or we are in school. What did you do over the break with your senior project?

• I concentrated on my independent component during winter break. I began to break down my independent component into different sections that would help me understand what contacts are and their impact on people. I will learn how to put on contacts as well as maintenance of the product which include eye solutions and other essentials, teaching patiences, and understanding why and how contacts are so beneficial. This is just an overview of what I plan on doing. I have already scheduled days to complete the 30 hours needed.   

2. What was the most important thing you learned from what you did, and why? What was the source of what you learned?

• I learned that contacts provide confidence and comfort for all with vision impairment. They allow the self conscious to come out of their shell and fell confident with out the stigma that glasses have. Contacts are also comfortable and unnoticeable which allow one to feel as if they have nothing in their eye. Contacts are also extremely affordable, for they offer many economical packages that vary the life span of the product. The longer the contacts last the more expensive the shorter the cheaper.  

3. Your third interview will be a 10 question interview related to possible answers for your EQ. Who do you plan to talk to and why?

• Since my essential question is based on the correlation between poverty and vision loss I will be interviewing Dr. Morris, an optometrist that is experienced with poverty. He frequently travels to Mexico; a country with a large amount of its population below or at the poverty line, to give free vision check ups to the poor. I am confident that he will very helpful with any question I may have with my essential question.
